A Father’s Day Letter About Bitcoin
This is an opinion op-ed by Will Schoellkopf, author of “The Bitcoin Dog” and soon-to-be father.
I was a computer science major at UCLA when I first heard about bitcoin in 2013. Skeptical of this magical new internet currency, it wasn’t long before the exchange implosed Mt. Gox does confirm this skepticism, illustrating how important it is to have self-custody of your bitcoin. At the time, however, easy-to-use cold storage hardware wallet solutions weren’t yet available, so I made the mistake of giving up, deciding then and there that it wasn’t worth it. learn more about bitcoin.
I was wrong.
While you are not yet born, my heart is already warm with your love. As I think about this upcoming Father’s Day, my first as a father-to-be, I can already imagine myself hugging you. You’re swaddled in a cute little onesie and a floppy hat, and as I rock you from side to side, I nudge your nose with my nose.
“Who’s Daddy’s Girl?” I whisper in your ear. “You’re the!” My eyes bulge with pride. A smile beams across my face when, to my surprise, you struggle to reach out and grab my nose! Your little fingers are barely able to grasp.
Today, as I sit in our rocking chair, the one we’ll be rocking back and forth in, you in my arms, I look out your childhood bedroom window and reflect on the world in which I want to take you: a world where cold storage hardware wallet solutions are readily available. I think about the goals you will set for yourself, your dreams, your ambitions! But I don’t want you to have it all – not too easily, anyway. Although I want the best for you, I don’t plan to give it to you on a silver platter.
As your father, I will raise you to be a young woman who works hard for what she wants. I want you to be master of your destiny. Have the opportunity to succeed. To chart a path so engaging, so thrilling, so “I can’t believe this is really happening” that you willingly give blood, sweat, and tears to your passions without blinking an eye. As things stand, however, you don’t have the financial freedom to do so.
Although I so earnestly wish that you could be born free, your career choices (as they are for most young men and women in our society) remain caged by inflation. I fear that the knowledge of a net income handicapped by soaring inflation rates will lead you to deliberately limit yourself – that in turn, you will handicap your own ability to develop your creativity, by refusing the forms of expression of selves that reflect the fire of your inner spirit. Out of necessity to overcome inflation via a high-paying role, you may feel driven to trade your passion for cruelty, to sacrifice your life dream for the life of a beast of burden – one who needs to let loose a mighty roar to break free from the inflation cage!
Bitcoin fixes that.
Bitcoin is the key that allows you to calmly open the door to peacefully exit the cage. Although pennies in your piggy bank stand no chance against inflation, you will be able to stack sats, and these simply cannot be inflated. You’ll be free to live whatever life you want and save for your future too.
My beloved daughter, you are your own person. You can flutter like a butterfly or sting like a bee, the choice is yours. By living on a fiat standard, a unit of account controlled by a central bank with an artificially increased money supply at will, your wings will fight a headwind of inflation. But if you opt for the Bitcoin standard, you will fly for free. Thanks to Bitcoin, you are free to choose the career that best suits you and your lifestyle, with the certainty that you are now equipped with savings technology capable of retaining the value of your work over the long term.
Since you are my daughter, I am sure you will share the same critical thinking skills as your father. (Although in all honesty, I hope you consider your mother in this department; she is the true critical thinker of this family!) Of course, you know not to trust me blindly, but rather check my bitcoin claims for yourself. Even dad, despite his background in computer science, first approached bitcoin as just an unproven software algorithm, quickly dismissing it. It took another eight years, but I finally leaned in for another look – more than superficial, this time – and only then to appreciate Bitcoin for what it really is: a once-in-a-civilization monetary revolution.
I can already hear you thinking, “If dad is super powerful, why can’t he just change the bitcoin supply?”
Dear girl, here is my answer: follow the principles of Bitcoin; don’t just listen to me, do your own research. There is so much to learn about Bitcoin! Find out why no more bitcoins will be created once you’re a little older…not 18, but 118! All there is in the world is all that will ever be. Remember, girl, if you’re going Bitcoin, there’s literally no limit to your potential.
Dad will always be proud of his little girl.
